Description

General aspect and origins - Mandevilla sanderi is also known as Mandevilla sanderei, Dipladenia sanderi or Brasilian jasmine. This twining vine is native to Brazil and has very ornamental pink, red-pink or white flowers.
Leaves - Leaves are evergreen, glossy, opposite, about 2-6 in (5-15 cm) long, green to dark-green, oval, leathery.
Flowers - Flowers are trumpet-shaped and appear from mid-spring to late-summer. They are about 2 in (5 cm) wide and can be pink-white, pink or red-pink, with white and yellow throats. They have 5 rounded petals and are grouped in terminal clusters of 3-5 flowers.

Culture

This plant can be grown outdoors in USDA zones 10 and 11. In colder climates, it should be grown under glass or indoors.

Varieties and cultivars:

  • M. sanderi 'Alba' - White flowers with yellow-white throats. Flower buds are pink-white.

  • M. sanderi 'Red Riding Hood' - Pink-red flowers with yellow-white throats.

  • M. sanderi 'Rosea' - Pale-pink flowers with yellow-white throats.


Soil - This vine needs a fertile, non-alcaline and well-drained soil.

Propagation

This plant can be propagated by seeds in spring or by cuttings in mid-spring (herbaceous cuttings) to late-summer (ripe wood cuttings).
